The Evolution of Death In this hour-long lecture the Museum Curator will explore the changes in the attitudes and rituals surrounding death, dying, and burial from the Victorian age to now. Learn about the Good Death, home funerals and current funerary practices that differ wildly from most of human history, and why these practices have changed so rapidly in the last 150 years. From belts to gun holsters, leather making was an important trade during the 19th century. Join museum staff to learn about how leather is made and its historic uses while trying your hand at leather making. At each of these classes, the Museum Curator will discuss how to protect specific types of objects from agents of deterioration, such as pests, air and water. Take a look at the Great Depression in Downers Grove through objects, words and sound. Explore the resilience and experiences of the people who lived here at one of the toughest times in American history, and connect the Downers Grove experience to the larger national experience of the time.
