Youth Birding Club Do you love birds or photography? Are you looking to learn basics in ornithology or just looking for a fun place to hang out with friends with similar curiosities? You’ve come to the right place! In our birding club, you’ll get to learn about different seasonal birds, the best ways to attract birds to your yard, and go out on hikes with our naturalist to seek out beautiful and fascinating birds in our forest! Each session is a different topic, but we’ll always go on hikes and add new birds to your checklist! This is a drop-off, youth/teen-only program. This contest is open to all organizations, civic groups, families and businesses, so rally up your Scout Troop, local club or officemates. Groups can choose to construct either a traditional scarecrow, or a sharecrow. A sharecrow is made with wildlife-friendly edible ingredients. Prizes for the contest include a 1.5-hour free program at Lyman Woods. Scarecrows will be displayed along the trails at Lyman Woods from October 4 through November 8 for all to see! Only one person per group needs to register. Participants will receive an email in September with contest details. Farm to Table: Apple Pie New! Learn all about the transformation of apples into one of America’s most iconic and delectable treats! From apple cultivation and local farm history, to the making of apple desserts from our Victorian-era recipes, join us for a scrumptious journey into all things apple pie! Program will be held indoors and outdoors, so please dress for the weather. Please register everyone attending. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Age: All Min/Max: 5/30 Fee: $16 William F Sherman Jr Interpretive Center - Lyman Woods Class # Date Day Time 4500P13-01 10/11 SU 1:00-2:30pm Relics and Ruins Get a special, behind-the-scenes tour of the ruins and remains of past buildings at Lyman Woods and examine close-up the many fascinating artifacts unearthed over the years at the preserve. Be sure to bring your hiking shoes as you’ll be guided off trail by our staff to uncover remnants from the late 1800s through the 1980s. Please register everyone attending. We’ll embark on a walk through the forest, following winding trails and listening for the whispers of nature all around. Along the way, we’ll search for tiny treasures— pinecones, evergreen sprigs, berries, and more—to add to our simmer pot around the campfire. As we walk, we’ll share stories, make wishes for the season ahead, and soak in the quiet magic of winter. Back at the cozy campfire, we’ll warm up with cups of spiced apple cider and share freshly popped kettle corn as we add our collected treasures to a bubbling pot of spices and citrus. Together, we’ll celebrate the return of the sun. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Please register everyone attending.
