Fishel Park has a rich history dating back to its earliest days as the original site of the Avery Coonley School. In 1944, the property was purchased by the Lions Club and later deeded to the Village of Downers Grove with the promise that it would always remain a memorial honoring veterans. The park continued to grow as a community gathering place with the construction of the original bandshell in 1953, and in 1972 it was officially deeded to the Downers Grove Park District. Today, Veterans Memorial Pavilion—constructed and dedicated in 2012—serves as the home of the popular Summer Concert Series, welcoming more than 15,000 visitors each summer to enjoy music, community, and make lasting memories.
