Discover new ways to give back and honor Mother Nature this spring! Earth Week, the 7-day celebration that encompasses the Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 25) holidays, is a weeklong series of festivities and programs for participants both young and old to connect with nature. Check out one of the special programs below to find fun ways to help restore our local environment, to learn something new and to make cherished memories with friends and family. Some programs are free, some are fee-based. Registration required for all programs.
BIOBLITZ BASH NEW! Participate in a week-long Bio Blitz contest and compete to capture snapshots of nature around you! Our BioBlitz will involve using the iNaturalist app or website to record pictures or audio clips of as many different species of plants, animals, mushrooms, and any other living organisms as possible that live within the Chicago Region. Official contest rules and instructions for registering for iNaturalist and uploading observations will be emailed out by Friday, April 18. The contest will be open from Monday, April 21 through Sunday, April 28. At the end of the contest, staff will review submitted iNaturalist accounts and choose a winner for each age group. Please register for the appropriate age category below. Children’s category is for ages 6 to 15; adult category is ages 16 and up. VEGGIE GARDENING 101 NEW! Get the dirt on everything you need to know about starting your own veggie garden at home! We’ll go through the ins and outs from garden bed prep, seed and plant selection, planting, maintaining and harvesting. Take homes may include seeds, seedlings and more! Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Please register everyone attending. Enjoy a special, interactive reading of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, then play hands-on games that will immerse you in the story’s lessons and characters. Lastly, we’ll scatter some beautiful native plant seeds that will be sure to bring the Lorax and his friends back this spring! This is a youth-only, drop-off program.
